The MCL1100 EasyReader supports both 40 and 80 characters per line. The 80 characters per line is for use with monitors (highly recommended for the serious listener).
The MCL1100 EasyReader will decode most AFSK modulated baudot/ASCII RTTY and CW signals. It incorporates a system called SMARTLOCK which enables the EasyReader to automatically adjust itself to a signal. The most noticeable advantage of SMARTLOCK is the virtual elimination for the need to fine tune the receiver to align it to the Decoder. Other advantages include automatic speed determination, automatic mark/space inversion, and automatic shift selection (RTTY). In essence, SMARTLOCK frees an operator of many tedious tasks associated with RTTY/CW Readers.
CW AND RTTY
Continuous Wave (CW) and Radioteletype (RTTY) fall into the category known as Digital communications. Fortunately, it is not necessary to understand the theory of CW and RTTY to operate the EasyReader successfully; therefore we will not endeavour to discuss CW and RTTY in this manual. However, if you are interested in this type of communication many excellent books are available for all levels of users.
SMARTLOCK SYSTEM
The inclusion of SMARTLOCK in the MCL1100 EasyReader puts it aside from other Decoders, particularly in its ease of operation. Comparison tests have shown that the MCL1100 EasyReader’s performance is superior to many more expensive Decoders.
So what is SMARTLOCK and why is it such an improvement over conventionally designed Decoders? SMARTLOCK is a method of intelligent demodulation developed by Momentum Electronics Limited.
Basically, the input signal is passed through a simple analogue filter intended to remove mains and spurious signals. Before any processing takes place, the signal is digitised and a microcontroller handles the signal processing through to printable characters. Because the demodulator is able to adjust its processing technique in an intelligent manner "SMART" and is able to search and "LOCK" onto a signal. it has been given the name "SMARTLOCK".
Conventionally designed decoders usually use filters to extract the digital information from the signal. The filter output is then converted by a processor to printable text. Such a technique suffers from the following disadvantages:
Fine tuning of the receiver is necessary once a signal has been found to align that signal with the decoder's input filters.
The tone of the signal is determined by the input filter passband. This can be irritating, particularly in CW mode if a user prefers to listen to Morse at 800Hz and the Reader input filter is set at 1KHz.
The input filters need to be fairly selective and, if implemented using analogue techniques, their performance tends to suffer due to component drift. (As a result of temperature and age).
Input filters implemented using digital filters (usually switched capacitor type), although stable do tend to be expensive.
