The MLA-S (MMT) is an indoor magnetic loop antenna developed by the Czech BTV company. It is the first commercial version built using the concept of patented magnetic loop antennas known as MLA-SMART. Unlike earlier versions, the MLA-SMART antennas have a more complex architecture of the basic L/C resonant circuit. The MLA-ER design, by OK2ER, uses a quasi-virtual capacitor created by inserting a metal pad into the loop pipe cavity. However, this antenna has not gained popularity due to its demanding tuning procedure. The MLA-SMART design improves on the MLA-ER idea and simplifies the tuning process. It utilizes a multi-layer conductor in the L/C circuit, with the second layer acting as the virtual capacitor. The third layer can be used as a capacitive coupling section of the antenna loop.
The MLA-S (MMT) antenna offers several advantages, including being small, lightweight, low-cost, and wide-band. Unlike other magnetic loop antennas on the market, the MLA-S (MMT) can operate over the full SW frequency range and even on the 160-m band. It is an improved version of the MLA-M (multi-band) antenna, which has been popular for over seven years. The MLA-S (MMT) has higher efficiency at the top SW band segment, thanks to the avoidance of the shorted second loop turn. Its efficiency is improved by ten times compared to the MLA-M (MMT).
The MLA-S (MMT) antenna is manually tuned and turned on a tripod. It can be switched to any of three short-wave segments using a jumper. The antenna can be continuously tuned over these segments using a classic variable capacitor. The short-wave segments selectable by the MLA-MMT jumper are 80 and 60 meters, 40 meters, and 30 through 10 meters. The MLA-S (MMT) is designed with a "triangle match" that allows for matching the antenna with SWR close to 1:1. This ensures effective radiation. Other MLA manufacturers often overlook this important condition, resulting in antennas that cannot be perfectly matched. BTV MLAs are equipped with configurable coupling devices, such as a rotatable FCL or the "triangle match," to optimize the radiation of RF power from a transmitter.
The MLA-S (MMT) operates on the following SW bands: 80m, 60m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m, and CB.
