The RF u-Tuning filters mitigate noise and intermodulation effects on the lower ham bands, allowing for clearer reception of weak signals. These filters utilize large Ni-Zn Ferrite cores and a precision stepper motor to achieve a high Q and a steep resonance peak near the operating frequency. The system also increases the 3rd-order Intercept Point (IP3) by 4 dB. Additionally, the ferrite cores are driven by a high-resolution, high-torque stepper motor with an estimated lifetime of more than 10,000 hours of operation. The RF u-Tune system tracks the operating frequency and can be manually adjusted for special interference conditions.

The MTU-160, MTU-80/40, and MTU-30/20 modules can be connected externally with no internal modification required. For 160-meter operation, the ferrite core diameter is 2.2" (55 mm). The RF u-Tune system is compatible with the FT-2000 series, FTDX5000 series, FTDX9000 series, and FT-950 and requires the external µ-tuning base kit when not mounted internally, which is only possible on the FTDX9000 series. If the RF u-Tune system is turned off when leaving the frequency or switching to other bands, it will re-centre the u-Tune filter on the current operating frequency when re-engaged.
