The MFJ-1736 is a versatile antenna for fixed or portable six-meter FM operation. Despite its lightweight and simplicity, the J-pole design ensures efficient radiation and low VSWR. When correctly installed, the antenna's resonant frequency should be around 52.5 MHz with a VSWR of less than 2:1 over most FM segments of the band.

The MFJ-1736 consists of a 1/2-wave radiator voltage-fed by a matching stub. Coax is tapped onto the stub at the correct low-impedance feed point to provide a 50-ohm match. The radiating portion is designed with both sides tied together to increase apparent element diameter and improve operating bandwidth.

To ensure durability and prevent water migration, a special water-proof sealant has been applied to the coax braid and all solder connections. Heat shrink has also been used to provide additional durability to the connections. The MFJ-1736 comes ready to use, but it is important to seal all coaxial connectors against weather and moisture in the usual manner.

Installation is simple with the coax cable allowing for direct connection to an SO-239 connector or an extension of any length needed. Using inexpensive nylon string, the antenna can be supported over a tree limb or non-metallic structure. However, it is important to avoid installing the MFJ-1736 near wires, other feedlines, or large metallic surfaces that could distort the radiation pattern or detune the element.
