◾ For many years amateur radio operators have raved about our 2-meter mobile antenna (Model 2M-4) because of its outstanding performance. One dealer/user (C&K Communications in Nokomis, Illinois) was so elated with the performance of the mobile whip that they pieced together a base antenna that used the mobile whip as its radiating element. The end result of their experiment was discovering that the base antenna performed even better than the mobile antenna. Their enthusiasm was so great that they ask us to consider making a commercial version for them to sell. And so, opportunity knocked and we answered the door.
◾ The radiating element is a 6 dBi 5/8 wave design. The core material is 9.5 mm (3.8 inches) solid fiberglass that is wound with 19ga heavy insulated copper wire. The radiating element is approximately 114 cm(45 inches). All of this is covered with white, UV-stabilized PVC shrink tubing. The antenna base threads are 3/8-24.
◾ A combination angle bracket, U-bolt, hub plate, and antenna stud is central to the assembly of the base antenna. This assembly will mount to the top of any mast up to 38 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter. The kit comes with four (4) structural aluminum (6061) radials that measure 3 mm x 13 mm x 51 cm (1.8 inch x 1.2 inch x 20 inch). Each is pre-drilled to mount to the hub plate. The antenna stud utilizes a standard SO-239 base for easy hook-up with any UHF (PL-259) terminated coaxial cable. ◾ The hub plate is a unique item that we designed to bring this base antenna together as a commercial kit. For the hobbyist, it will offer numerous opportunities to be creative. For further information on the hub plate, click here. The top to bottom height of the entire assembly is a mere 124 cm (49 inches) and the diameter of the radial circle is 112 cm (44 inches). All mounting and assembly hardware is included.
